Rain Holds off  on Saturday for Wormwood Scrubs Runners

As Parkrun organisers call for help from volunteers

Parkrun 153 - May 10

Saturday morning dawned a bit grey and drizzly, although the rain thankfully held off during the run. There were three first-timers today at the Scrubs out of the 33 runners lining up to start, all looking pretty cheerful for such a relatively gloomy morning.

There were 6 PBs (Personal Bests) today, including the first man and first woman home – congratulations! Charlie Ogilvie finished first, in a PB of 18:34. The second runner home, and first lady, was Gemma Carter of Serpentine RC, in a PB of 20:30. Manuel Corriente of Vegetarian Cycling and AC and Colm Doherty were the second and third men home, in 20:39 and 20:48. Second and third ladies were Andrea Broughton of Thames Valley Harriers and Matilda Ferrand, also of Thames Valley Harriers, in 22:57 and 25:08. Well done to Justin Burns, Louise Wayman, Kate Walters and Laura Moran, all of whom achieved PBs today.

Back in the clubhouse, we were trying to work out how many runs are left to the end of the season in terms of the points tables – four, we think. Marion Brydson is clear at the top of the female points table, but the situation is much tighter at the top of the male points table: Nick Michael has a slender lead of 33 points over Peter Jordan, with Rizwan Rauf less than 200 points behind Peter and James Malcolm in fourth place by only around 150 points. All to play for, guys, but you have to keep turning up to run!

Thanks as always to the volunteers this week, without whom the Parkrun would not happen: Run Director Rob Ferguson (who also looked after the timekeeping today), Rizwan Rauf (who always sets out and takes in the course), James Malcolm and William Paynter. Thanks also to Fraser Brydson for serving teas and coffees in the clubhouse after the run.

We rely on volunteers and we’re a bit short at the moment, so if you’d like to get involved in volunteering at the Wormwood Scrubs Parkrun, please email wormwoodscrubshelpers@parkrun.com

Parkrun 152 - May 3

It was a perfect day for running. The sky was clear, the sun was shining and the air was cool. A slight breeze, but that wasn’t really going to bother anybody. The course had transformed itself as if by magic into a running-friendly softish surface, courtesy of the recent rain, but without the mud and puddles of the winter months.

36 runners toed the starting line, including 8 first timers at the Scrubs. We were especially pleased to welcome back current male points champion Tim Barlow, who had brought along his three-month-old son Rafferty for his first Parkrun experience.

First runner home was Simon Hill in 19:34, followed by Geoffrey Keast in 19:40 and Gildas Braine from Queens Park Runners in 20:03. First lady home was Phillippa Keast in 20:23, followed by Andrea Broughton of Thames Valley Harriers in 22:42 and Camilla West of Ealing Eagles in 23:31.

Congratulations to Anthony Delaney, Camilla West, William Paynter, Laila Miles, Andrew Peaple and Annabel Andrew, all of whom ran personal bests today!

Thanks to the volunteers this week, without whom the Parkrun would not happen: Run Director Rob Ferguson, David Jackson, Gideon Reid, Paula Fitzpatrick and Rizwan Rauf. Thanks also to Nick Michael, who - in the absence of Marion and Fraser this week, off on a well-deserved break in Amsterdam - opened up the clubhouse, undertook the all-important task of putting on the urn so that we could all have refreshments after the race, and then served the teas and coffees.

We rely on volunteers, so if you’d like to get involved in volunteering at the Wormwood Scrubs Parkrun, please email wormwoodscrubshelpers@parkrun.com

See you next week!

Andrea
